First date

January 17 2010

This is just a question. You take a beautiful out on a first date to dinner or a coffe shop, you sit her down at the table, now where do you (being the male) sit. Do you sit beside her, or do you sit opposite her, and why.

Sitting beside is too intimate, so if it's the first time you are meeting the girl or you are just getting to know her, sit opposite.  This is always a safe bet and you can pay her lots of attention, and she you, without putting any pressure on.If you already know her quite well or you have agreed that the first date will end up intimately, then feel free to sit beside her.  If you're not sure about that, you could always motion to the seat and ask if she's ok for you to sit there.Ahhhh the nuances of dating!lilmiss x

Opposite.... it's impossible to play footsies off to the side.   Although off to the side you are less likely to be caught boob-watching.    Up to you - do you want footsies or boobies.   PS - You can't have both.

Body Language  Quoting 'customer69'  I would prefer that a guy sits opposite me, on the first date, because it is less imposing.  This would allow us to chat comfortably and appraise each other's body language and appeal, on all levels. Girls will usually make  up their minds, within the first couple of minutes...so you want to make this a positive experiencedishie is over and out Any decent body language expert would confirm customer69 & lilmiss are correct.Opposite is less intimidating and give the gal personal space. ciaoHermes (BA Psychology)

Right beside her.. so I can whisper in her ear if I have to..... and she can easily stroke my arm when she feels to urge... and we can accidently rub knees... oh.. and she gets the best view.   Hugs Stalky

As for this adjacent position at a square table being intimidating ..... yes.. I am addressing all those academic psychologists sitting there reading this and waving your index finger side to side..... Well, this may come as a bit of a surprise... but chairs can move .... people can shift positions in their chairs... it is even a very simple matter to shift your chair slightly to be less intimidating... conversations, body positions, serating positions, chair locations and facial expressions are usually very dynamic... there's no need to be stiffly stuck to your remedial couches with one finger on your chin, both eyes closed like a pompous prick >:-) .... it's a date!~   hehe   Hugs Stalky

now if you have hair growing out your ears and your nose gets everywhere ten minutes before you, sit in front, but if your eyes are to close together and your ears stick out badly plus you spit food when you talk, front no good either.under the table ? no thats just silly,

Quoting 'lilmissfussy' If you already know her quite well or you have agreed that the first date will end up intimately, then feel free to sit beside her.  If you're not sure about that, you could always motion to the seat and ask if she's ok for you to sit there. wouldn't that be a little bit strange asking if you can sit in seat X, Y or Z? (and seem like you're all a bit awe-struck to be out on a date?) If it was a booth with bench type seats then I'd sit opposite, otherwise I'd sit however the chairs were - lots of cafes have seats at 'tables for 2' arranged so they don't 'work' if you're not at least on an angle to each other.I met a delightful blonde girl in the city a few weeks ago, and we sat next to each other - thats how the chairs were - I really didn't feel that she was invading my personal space, we were both perfectly able to lean in or out, and turn towards each other or away as we pleased. But they were chairs with sides, so it wasn't like you were 'right on top of the other person', there was division - but not an insurmountable one lol.
