Want someone to pay your fines and take your demerit points? I frequently drive in Thailand and their road sense is a joke. But for us Aussie's we do not need a big bank balance to pay when it gets lethal. Just back from a nearly 10K trip to FNQ and nothing in the mail to upset me, my advice is to drive safe and avoid the Gov revenue stings, cause they are going to happen and I predict get worse with the depleting revenue the Gov is getting. Now,,,,, back to sex

To a point, there's a lot of revenue raising going on that governments actually rely on in their forward estimates for income. I will say, and with some experience to back me up that the primary reason for road fatalities is not solely speed, nor alcohol or drugs etc etc but that people continually fail to drive according to the conditions at hand. The Stuart Highway in the NT is a perfect example - between Larrimah, 160 km south of Katherine and Alice Springs, there is for the most part 700km of really good straight road that you could do 180kph+ on with no worries. I wouldn't expect to do that on the Great Ocean Road, or the Hume or Bruce Highways though because the road's not in the same condition. There were 26000 road fatalities in Thailand in 2010. And yes I've got crap speeding tickets too! - Posted from rhpmobile

If there was 26000 road fatalities in Thailand in 2010 with a then population of 63 million & Australia in 2010 had a road fatality toll of 1352, with a then population of 22 million, then I would say speed limits seem to work. It is unfair too paint all police officers with the same brush. They do a job, not one that I would wish to do.

I believe we have 12 points on our licence, so 6 down 6 to go for you. As it is quite clear that you have not learnt your lesson about speeding, let alone the fact that you have no regard for your famliies safety.

It's simple. The speed LIMIT is the maximum speed. That means that you can drive any speed up to that speed. People that can not mange this most simple task should not be allowed to drive. Cars KILL and maim, irresponsible and inattentiveness is the biggest single cause of road accident. If you can not mange to keep an eye on what speed you are doing? Get off the road. There is no excuse (unless there is a life at stake) to speed over the limit. I have had my license since the day I turned 17, been driving cars since 10 (off road). I was a dick back then, but from the age of 21 to now 47 and driving all the time both country and city, I have not had a single fine for any reason at all, I have not lost a single demerit point. Its easy to do, I am never late. I take my responsibility on the road very seriously and am applauded that people can not manage such a simple task as drive under the speed limit. OP I have no sympathy for you, even less for trying to lay blame else where. Speed kills, not matter what skill level you claim to have (OP piss poor in my book). Any thing can appear in front of you at any time. Momentum is the square of the speed, 5km makes a huge difference in the amount of energy your car has, and hence how much damage you can do and how long it will take to stop. You are 51 and you can not control a car, grow up or get off the road you are a danger, even worse is your attitude. I have no problem with the fines imposed, I personally think that they are too low. I have no need to worry about them as I never will get one, because I can drive.

You, know what the rules are. You, for whatever reson, didn't follow them. It's no one else's fault. Suck it up and pay the fine. Resolve next time to put cruise control on. Keep the roads safe for everyone.

...and had a spotlessly clean record for some time. The last ticket I got, I didn't have to pay as it had been more than ten years since the previous. For each of these infringements, I lost only one point as it was less than 10 kliks over the limit so I'm not in danger of losing my license (sorry if that disappoints you but I will remain on the road for quite some time yet). The simple fact is, while you think I was driving dangerously, I disagree. Considering the number of cameras I passed, tucked away in the bushes along the Hume, if the two fines I received were indicative of my driving, I would have lost my license two times over while travelling through Victoria. I have seven children, ages ranging from eight to twenty five and not one of them has experienced a car crash so don't go suggesting that I put my family in danger. I also ride a motorcycle and have never had a collision while riding either plus a private pilot license and had no incident at all against my flying record. If you think that 106 on an empty highway is reckless, then you have no mind of your own. Just go on believing what your Government tells you. I guess some are happier not having a questioning nature. This situation just made me think about the big picture and how we are all being put under the thumb. I was not simply talking about speed limits and road rules. I was thinking about the gulf between the haves and have nots.I just feel so constrained by modern life, disappointed by contemporary government and totally sick of the hypocrisy of authority. I thought I might raise the subject to discuss it in broader terms. It seems that many get stuck in the less significant aspects of what brought the overall topic to mind. C'est la vie. If you're happy with your lot and don't see or care about the inequities of modern life, I'm pleased for you.

Dubious (a few kms over) speeding fines are the canary in the coal mine! "well you should have obeyed the speed limits and obeyed the master plan" Government wants to keep your internet data too!!! "but I was just there for the forums". Bullshit!!! Victoria increased spending on prisons without hesitation over the last few years. Meanwhile education funding is constantly assailed, negotiated and questioned. Even kindergarten funding. They prefer we were all dumb and fearful, easier to control and manipulate. The federal government in particular is mostly tactless, boorish, insensitive thugs. Not the stoic, firm and principled humans you'd expect to lead a democratic country. A Kafkaesque scenario where pig-headed government puts legislation in place that make us a less intelligent and compassionate society, then needs harsher, increasingly ridiculous laws to control the ensuing chaos, which even the politicians can't abide by (because, believe it or not, they're human too) and become victims of their own oppression. Democracy or hypocracy!!! YEAH!!! I think it was Frank Zappa said that the world is 6 billion people in a pool up to their chins in liquid shit chanting "DON"T MAKE A WAVE! DON"T MAKE A WAVE!! Anyway, there's worse countries. Fight the power man!!!

As for the politicians well, if people voted for who they truly thought would be better leaders rather than try to pick the winner then we might make some progress. I think we may be getting better, I see the rise of minority parties as a good thing, Liberal and Labor have had it there way for far to long, I have not voted for their institutionalised mediocrity for decades.

the collision does, just like people afraid of heights, the height doesn't kill you, the impact of falling does. There are plenty of inept drivers that are not speeding that are a danger on our roads and the lack of attention is what brings people undone. I understand what Jensman is saying because I too feel like a drone on the road. Your alertness is impaired when you become complacent which is why many accidents happen close to home. I have seen many behaviours on the road that are far more dangerous than an alert speeding driver. Lane hoppers, tailgaters, people driving too slowly, drunks, drug affected including medication, people on phones, unmaintained vehicles and I would challenge anyone here who is harping on about speeding, especially at the small amounts Jensman was over the limit, to say they are not at all guilty at some stage of breaking a road rule. People need to drive to the conditions, be aware of their surroundings and the dangers of them. If Jensman happened to have an accident on the Great Ocean Road, the cause of a collision would have been the fact he was watching the view rather than the road, not the fact he was 8km over the speed limit. It is amazing how many people will justify their own reasons for breaking the law but condemn someone elses. Like Blindman said, he has been guilty of being a fuckwit on the road but fortunately he was lucky enough to get away with not being a statistic, someone else could be a perfectly law abiding citizen and anything could happen if they are not aware. I have never been in as much as a fender bender and I don't condone speeding but I have done it for one reason or another and you have no idea why someone is speeding. My sister got a speeding fine when my Nan was lying in bed dying and we were on our way to see her before she passed. She wasn't driving dangerously as such, she was never in any position where she may have had a collision but she was breaking the law. Even Vicroads thought that was good enough reason to forgive the fine.

Your excuses for not deserving those fines you got for breaking the law are: - The view was too nice- The Thais are so much worse and you saw no accidents there- The "There is no such thing as safe speeding" warning is just claptrap from our heavy handed government- We become less responsive if we do what's expected of and expect the same from others- Police officers speed too, and they are untrustworthy anyway- Tickets are for making money to benefit the country You're a grown man and I think you cant't blame others for your own errors. It sounds to me deserved what you got, shame you learned nothing from it. I like a rebel Jman, but I think taking no responsibility whatsoever is far from attractive. If we expect ourselves and others to abide by the law we are "mindless drones"? Remind me to never accept a ride from you.

.... always move to Thailand if you dont like it. Is it revenue raising?Probably. Does it make the road that little bit safer for motorists other than you? Probably. Cop it sweet, learn, and go a bit slower. Because it could always be worse...... you may not have made it to your holiday destination. DG

Enforcing speed limits so strictly that your primary task while driving is watching the speedo is counter productive. I found the cruise control essential even in the cities in Australia just so I could watch the road around me. I haven't been fined for speeding in 15yrs because I'm a cruise control freak. I have been fined for far more minor offences, more on that below. Have to disagree about the relative safety of the less controlled Asian countries. I'm not a tourist, I have lived and driven in India, Thailand, and Cambodia. It's madness, and the death toll per capita far exceeds that of Australia. If there were per km stats kept (which would be far more revealing as the % of people that drive is far lower in Asia), the rate would be much much worse. It's not speed that kills though, it's the stupidity of a minority, and more importantly that so many are on two wheels and so many of those don't wear helmets. You are much freer to do stupid things that get you killed, and many do. Despite that though, thing you do see for the most part though in Asia is common sense. Without the reliance on a strict rule of law people have worked out their own system that works for the most part, even if it looks like chaos to the casual western observer. They are predictably on the wrong side of the road, turning without looking, and creating those extra lanes where it doesn't seem possible. For the most part it just works. After spending so much time in Asia I do find Australia oppressive. There is no allowance for common sense, and I firmly believe that's why the majority don't have any. The roads are one example, but there are many more. Alcohol abuse is the most obvious for me. I spend a lot of time now where there are no restrictions on alcohol sales, and almost no tax. It is available anywhere any time to anybody at prices you wouldn't believe. Yet there are barely any issues (although driving late on a Saturday night can be a little scary). Contrast that with the carnage in the cities of Australia on Friday and Saturday nights. The only time there are issues related to alcohol around here there are groups of Aussie (or occasionally British) tourists involved. The amount of freedom in less developed places in the world is an eye opener. In many cases it gets people into trouble, but for those of us who do adjust and don't do really stupid things, it is quite liberating. I was once fined in Melbourne for not wearing a bicycle helmet on a dedicated bike path in a huge public park (for the record, I do recommend wearing a helmet when cycling on public roads because there are people out there trying to kill you). Another time I was fined for "driving across the footpath", when I cut through a service station on a corner at 5am - and I genuinely thought it was open and had intended to stop. Did you know it's illegal in Victoria to leave kids under 16 alone, at all! You can't duck down to the shops for 10mins with the young teenagers at home. According to the letter of the law a 15yr old can't even walk or ride to school alone. Don't get me started on drug laws, or gay marriage, or euthanasia. Let's be clear though, I'm all for harm reduction policies, and for ensuring people are safe from unscrupulous operators and idiots, but laws protecting people from themselves in Australia have gone to extremes. Laws against speeding are there to protect others and definitely have their place, but the enforcement of them at minor tolerances becomes oppressive (and counter productive). They are just one example though of "nanny state" type laws that are designed for the 1%. That's the 1% that are just too stupid to look after themselves or that put the rest of us in danger. I've noticed in many other places Darwinism is far more effective, and it's a much more interesting place as a result.

Driving a vehicle should be a part of our school studies . Say year ten highschool , road rules , vehicle basics , dangers and hazards , and of course practical skills . education does not mean running fucking adverts on television !!! Education and practice for life starts early as possible when we can do it safely in a controlled environment !!!! (Like schools) You DO NOT throw uneducated or the unskilled that lack confidence , in a dangerous environment you think you have control over. Penalties for bad behaviour will not save lives , education early WILL save lives . - Posted from rhpmobile

SimonDoes. Your argument is self justifying mombo jumbo. There is not proof that we have bad drivers due to over regulation. If that where true then we should all be happy for the pilots of our air craft to do what they want, find that extra space, take some risk to be on time, and not have to be constricted by the endless safety red tape and out outrageous fines. Around 300 people a year die on our roads, thousand are permanently disabled and need life time care. Its a silent killer, it does not make the news as a tragedy, nobody seems to care. What if we take all the people that get killed and maimed every year, put them in a jumbo jet and run it into the ground EVERY single year. Would you fly, there would be outrage, it would not be tolerated. Yet we say it is our god given right to drive how we see fit. You dont need cruse control, its easy to stay under the speed limit. Why can people not get this. its a LIMIT, it means you can not drive over it, you SHOULD not be driving at that speed. The fines should start at 1KIM over the limit. The road rules are not over regulated, they are very slack, they is barely any enforcement. Do you not know how much extra energy you put into a car when you just go a few meters per second faster. Speeding is the biggest single contributor to road death in Australia, our police know this, our governments know this, our doctors and nurses know this, and the tens of thousand of families that have suffered or continue to suffer know this. 5Km and hour over the limit is the difference between life and death. Cars are not toys. Selfish complacency. You should all spend a week in your local emergency center, then come back and tell me what speeding does. (5km over is too fast)

I have thought for a long time now that our government had no place getting us involved in Islamic turmoil and making our peaceful country a target. The Arabic nations have been feuding and killing themselves off for thousands of years and it's not about to stop anytime soon but we had to get in the middle of it. Why was that? Because our politicians are lackeys for the Americans. We only go in following them because it best serves their political and economic goals. There are (and have been) atrocities of grand scale committed frequently in Africa and Asia which we don't become involved in because it doesn't serve American interests so why the Arab nations?Yet everyone here still wants to focus on the trivial part of my post. I'm saying that only a camera would see it that way. A person, whether police officer or innocent bystander, would not have given me a second glance.Cameras are purely for revenue raising not making the roads a safer place. If my driving were unsafe, surely I would not have made it to fiftyone let alone my destination. If my driving were unsafe, a police officer would stop me, not take my picture and say, "If you get where ever it is you're going, it'll cost ya".I saw several police vehicles on my trip and none of them saw fit to stop me. Most of them were actually going faster than me. Now correct me if I'm wrong but aren't emergency vehicles required to obey the same rules we do when driving unless in an actual emergency and then they should use their sirens and lights? Is it somehow safe for them to exceed posted limits while obviously a menace if someone without a badge does it? Oh, by the way, Federal MP Craig Thompson has been found 'not guilty' of his 49 fraud charges after all. Hmmm, that gulf I was talking about isn't getting any narrower now, is it?

I just noticed by the end of my stay that, as everyone was driving the same way, most seemed more alert than Australian drivers and aware of what was going on around them. Many of our motorists are zombies behind the wheel. I was hoping more of you would, like myself, prefer to see something in the middle ground. Believe me, I would not like to see entire families travelling on mopeds with homemade sidecars fashioned from reo steel travelling against the traffic on Australian roads. I still disagree with you Blindman. If the speed limits are so absolute, rather than arbitrarily assigned, why would the same road under the same conditions have a 110 kph limit on one side of the border and 100 kph on the other. I don't know, maybe it's the innate differences between the competence of South Australian drivers as compared to Victorian drivers. Could that be the case? Comments, please.

Why is it we go where the yanks say we should? Why go at all? IS is not the enemy we went to war with. They are the sect that sprang up because they believe Westerners had no place becoming involved in Arabic affairs to begin with. I am definitely not in favour of Sharia law but it is their law. Our fight should be to keep all that out of this country, not go over there prompting them to retaliate here.

If you do some research using proper sources and not just the awful mainstream media in this country you start seeing a much bigger picture about what has happened and what is happening in the middle east. You start to realise that this is far from a simple 'Islamic extremists hate our western way of life' conflict and you realise that western involvement has many ulterior motives which have had some disastrous consequences. Who do you think was responsible for the chaotic conditions that allowed groups such as ISIS / ISIL to start gaining traction over there in the first place? Who do you think was initially funding and providing weapons to ISIS? But, our government knows that few people care to do such research. They know they can trot out the simplistic slogans and bullshit reasons for why we have to blindly follow American into the middle of the mess with all drones blazing, and for why ASIO et al. need absolutely unrestricted and unchecked powers to surveil all Australian citizens, and most people will fall for it hook, line and sinker. Exactly the same thing is happening when it comes to so many of the retrograde actions and legislation being implemented by this farce of a government. They know that an ill-informed population with little ability to think critically is much easier to control, and we certainly are a prime example of that at the moment.

At least I got people talking about something other than dick and tit size for a change. You do know what the UN is I hope? I do hope you understand how its was born from the ashes of WW2? Its called the United Nation for a reason. Befor WW2 the was the league of nations, which was something similar but because of it was picky about who signed on, and the system of law making was not democratic it lacked any real power. It was partly to blame for WW2. It was run by greedy nations for their own benefit. The UN was created to stop the powers that be taking advantage, it was born from the blood of tens of millions of lives. It gives every country in the world equal status in the representation, policy creation, and enforcement. Polices are made as part of a democratic process. It will only work if the majority of counties abide by those rules. With that each country must do its bit to support the decisions made. Unfortunately that makes us a target, but we can not back away and run, if we do what then? This has nothing to do with the USA you ignoramus. We can not withdraw from the UN nations. We stand together or we all fall. If the house next door starts to burn we all rally to aid those that need help, We do not stand back and say its none of our business. Only cowards do that. The house can only be save if we all pull together, if we ignore it the flames will spreed and well all burn. You should really take some time to understand what is happening, Islam is a ancient and diverse religion, it deserves respect. The extremist only use it as a railing call, they, in no way represent what the vast majority of people consider an enlightened and peaceful religion. They use miss understanding as a tool for their own selfish desires for power, they are but a tiny minority. You OP are the lackey, play right in the hands of those you seem to hate., you fan the flames. You push to disband those who are trying to help. You speak the very same words as the extremists. Isolation, bigotry, greed. You are a coward concerned only with your self. Show some respect to the many cultures and people that come in here and stop sprouting this utter nonsensical dribble. I seem to recall towards the end of the kennet gov in vic stating that speeding motorists would not get any lower as those caught were either accidental, inattentive or sped habitually and probably never change. If the powers that be were serious about zero road tolls and not revenue, they would increase fines to boarder line ridiculous and repeat offenders receiving gaol . I hate the false pretense this is governed under and the deceitful way it is enforced. however a crime is a crime and is like saying theft is only bad if the police are standing there and someone gets hurt. Or I didn't mean to shoot that person so I shouldn't be jailed. At the end of the day, law is law and punishments are dealt when it is broken. I just wish governments would cut the bs and admit the revenue is brilliant for them - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'Blindman67' SimonDoes. Nice straw man you have there. What I actually said (in a long winded way) is that over-regulation leads to a population that doesn't think much for itself. I also said quite clearly that there is a need for regulation. Taken too far though it becomes oppressive, and that's how I feel returning to Australia sometimes. I'm not saying that I can prove anything. It's an opinion, based on a lot of time in both very unregulated and very regulated States. I firmly believe we would be better off if more people did a little more thinking for themselves. Others prefer to believe everything they are told and that the authorities will always know what's best. As always, each to their own.

The authorities are bound by the need to provide freedom and the need to protect. I opt for protection, not that you or most need it as most are responsible drivers, it is the few that spoil it for the rest. I go hard line. I apologise for miss reading your post, Guess I got lost in the textual mass of it (understand that was not your fault). Just the OP had me hot under the hood and thus was snapping at anything that moved. I do read that the more regulated places like Germany have lower deaths per 100000k than many more liberal counties like Australia. Yes they have Autobahns but they have a very different attitude to safety. Getting a licences there is hard work and fines are hefty. What we really should be looking at is the new technology, and start to work on integrating it into our transport system and the legal system as they are beginning to fall behind.

I reckon y'all need to come sit next to me..... But.... The licensing and training system is a joke. Here's something to think about.... Put 10 people in a room and ask them "are you a safe driver?" 10/10 will answer yes.... Ask those same 10 if the person beside them is and you'd have quite a different answer... Point is, attitude whilst behind the wheel of any vehicle is paramount. Safe driving isn't a speed... Safe driving isn't two hands on the wheel.... Safe driving is a mindset....it's not about me making it home safely; but making sure the person beside me does.... Death is usually a result of high inertia. Speed affects that level of inertia. And it's the ONLY factor that's easy to manage, teach, and enforce; as it's not illegal yet to be a fuckwit. - Posted from rhpmobile

I can't quite remember who said it, but it was something like; There is nothing more dangerous than a man who thinks he is free. Now, I don't know how everyone else feels about it, but living in a common law land but living under statutory law created by a corporate government (all state governments are ABN registered) seems to me like most aren't free at all. Corporations work for profit. People have to stop blindly believing that the People's interest is their main agenda. People should also realise that being free means the only way you can be governed by another, is through consent. Answer me this? If all 1st world countries are in debt, who has all the money? Oh, and Hi all. Long time reader, not so long poster 😊 - Posted from rhpmobile

The speed limits were first reduced in America, later Australia followed, nothing to do with speeding accidents, it was to reduce consumption of the Black Gold big gas guzzling saloons at 110km were chewing fuel and over the love of large heavy cars and utes called trucks built around cheap fuel until into reserves and the money giants needed oil in the bank, and double dipped the people by government passing government savings to government enforcement of a few hundred percent mark up fines of revenue Authorities picked it up and called it high speed danger and drummed it into one of the biggest cheats from the differance of 10 or 20 km and hour individual costs about $5 bucks that adds up when every one adds $5 bucks. And the raught of making that 10 or 20 km a violation speeding, death, bad person, the big powerful words and the fines were of the top end $100's an hour over the speed limit in revenue, and police officers every tool and trick to monitor and collect the dividends. The thing is, a late model Toyota Camry, Nissan Skyline, BMW, Subaru...................... Are more dangerous on the road at 80 km than 160-180 + In another part of the world Europe were building smaller and faster, safer with technology, money invested in wind tunnels and creating the vacuum of down force as speed increased, proud results and built roads to enjoy and increase safety. The breaking system, engine and transmission, the whole drive chain can pull the vehicle to a stop safely, 80 ks the cars are just sitting on the road and not a particularly comfortable ride as they wander on a suspension system all up in the air and going around corners, trying to roll over off the road until the suspension takes up the slack. At 160km, the vehicle is sitting low in the suspension as the aerodynamics pulls the car down and 180km, it is sitting about right the engine is running under load and the transmittion is working with the engine and aceleration is responsive, deceleration resposive to engine braking with a sensitive all wheel anti skid breaking system, if you stuff up and lose control, the car takes over and gets you back stable with the most centered position from sensors all over the place. At 180km the car is being driven and little chance of reaching over to the glove box, or in a trance of just steering and day dreaming the drive in slow motion. You were just revenue, Jman, the margins of speed variance was taken down to 2km over from about 8 or 9km. Who is looking for money lately, the big guys at the top are giving the revenue collectors the squeeze. And at least some of the speed cameras placed in revenue locations are being removed.
